Art

Hello! We are Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs McCandless, and together we lead Art at Bridge Hall Primary School.

As staff members, we are passionate about nurturing skill and talent and like to give our children the opportunity to express themselves in as many different ways as possible. Art is the perfect subject in which to do this. Children are taught a carefully planned progression of skills all the way from Nursery up to Year 6, building on prior knowledge and giving them a chance to try out new tools, skills and techniques.

We cover a wide range of topics including; drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, collage, design, digital media and print. We use both modern and historical influences from all around the world, embracing different cultures.

We have a key focus artist for each topic in every year group, and you will find knowledge organisers in our sketchbooks provide helpful facts and vocabulary to support the art topic.

Art is so important to our children, and we love teaching it because:

  • Fostering creativity won't just increase a child's chances of becoming the next Picasso. It will also help them develop mentally, socially, and emotionally.

  • Creating art may boost young children's ability to analyse and problem-solve.

  • As children manipulate a paintbrush or pencil, their fine motor skills improve.

  • When children experiment with materials, they dabble in science.

  • Most importantly, children feel good while they are creating. Art helps boost self-confidence.

  • Children who feel able to experiment and to make mistakes feel free to invent new ways of thinking and take risks which can extend well beyond the classroom.
